This tradition is part of ancestral culture, starts long time ago, the history begin because one time when the people of Xantolo were sad and visited grave yards. A espirit appeared with a mask he started dancing around the graves, everybody ran because they were scared and they went home, and to look for the priest "chamán tének" to tell him what they saw, so he would perform a ritual to expell the espirit. The priest went to the grave yards and the spirit stilled dancing, the priest asked him who you are? and he answered, Im the spirit from Xantolo, I want to show you how to honor died people with this dance. the people thought that it was a joke, but suddenly more people arrived and started dancing. Since then word spread throughtout the Huasteca Potosina and Veracruzana.People have followed the tradition to organize dances with "huehues"; with masks and dance in the street with a smile in their faces instead of be sad.
